Baby Boom
After World War Two came to an end, many babies were born between the years 1946 and 1964 after soldiers returned home from a long war. This generation of babies would create a wave of new trends and affect life as they continued to grow up.
As Babies
As babies, the need for day cares and medical care increased dramatically. The need for hospitals rose as more and more women were giving birth and their children would need medical attention as they grew up. The need for day cares increased as well as mothers would want to return to work and needed someone to watch their children. As Children As children, schools, new homes and neighborhood expansions were becoming very common. Because of the large number of babies being born, more schools needed to be built to support and educate the large number of children that would need schooling in future years. As well as new schools, new homes were being built and most commonly these homes were built in new neighborhoods known as suburbs. In the suburbs, there were identical homes and green grass with trimmed hedges. Many couples wanting to start families moved into these homes and took out mortgages. Because of these neighborhoods being built, families started to buy cars, which led to the paving of roads. As Teens As the baby boomers grew up into their teens they started countless amounts of trends and paved the way for teens from that time on. Before the baby boomers time, people were children until they became adults – there wasn’t a name for this age group before this time. Because of the fact that there were so many teens, mass amounts of trends came about, mainly clothing and music. Rock and roll was among the youth during the 50s, one of the biggest stars, known as the King, Elvis Presley. Elvis was said to be a distraction to teenagers and inappropriate. However, despite what schools said about rock and roll music, teens continued to listen and attend the rock concerts. Teens also had their own way of dressing, abandoning traditional clothing items and switching to more youthful and fun clothing. Teens also had to do with the creation of more recreational centres. Teens needed to be active and wanted to play sports so many buildings for sports and other recreational activities were created. |
As Adults
When the generation of baby boomers grew up and became adults, the work field changed dramatically. Great deals of positions were filled, and many professions had an abundance of workers in the field. Although at the time, the excessive amounts of workers may have been useful, the numbers are starting to take a toll on the youth currently looking for work. With so many work fields of work being full – for example nursing, students coming out of university or college will have a difficult time finding work. This leaves these students in debt and causes further issues. As Seniors In the present day, a lot of the current generation of baby boomers is retired or close to retiring and many things are changing or will have to change. More retirement homes will be needed which means that more old age home nurses will be needed. And while a large portion of the population is retiring, more job opportunities are becoming available and more of the youth will have the ability to choose a field that is not already full. However, although more jobs will become available and the unemployment rate will go down, taxes will rise to support senior citizens needs for things like health care. |
Urbanization, Immigration and Immigrant Contributions
After the war, Canadian soldiers returned home and wanted to start families – this was the main cause of the baby boom. However, many people from Europe immigrated to Canada at this time and that also contributed to the large population growth. After world war two, Canada introduced an immigration policy, which would help increase the population. The people in Europe wanted a better life so they left for Canada and commonly settled in Toronto, Vancouver, and Montreal. Despite the surge in immigration from Europe to Canada, in 1950 |
Canadian Radio-television Telecommunications Commission
The Canadian Radio-television Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) was created in 1976. The purpose of the CRTC is to regulate and supervise broadcasting and telecommunication systems across Canada. The CRTC is in charge of things like the 9-1-1 service, mandatory television channels and issues out licenses to radio stations – for example CBC. The CRTC ensures that Canadian content receives enough media time, which improves Canada’s own identity. |
In conclusion, the CRTC has improved the Canadian identity and the immigrants from Europe and Asia have added to Canada as well. The revolution of teens during this era has impacted life from that time on and the baby boomers have affected many aspects of life as they grew up and continue to age today.
